Orange County Commissioner Christine Moore for District 2 is seeking re-election for a second four-year term in this non-partisan race, facing two opponents — Christopher Delgado and Sandra Fatmi-Hall — in the Aug. 23 primary. The newly redrawn District 2 includes all of Ocoee as well as Apopka and the northwest part of the county.

When she announced in November her re-election bid, Moore, who was the first woman to represent District 2, said in a news release that she worked to improve road safety “through new traffic signals, LED street lighting, new sidewalks, and slower vehicular speeds. She has successfully promoted greater self-reporting of infrastructure deficiencies through the county’s 311 app. Additionally, partnering with faith-based and civic organizations, Moore has led numerous community clean-ups.”

On her campaign site, Moore, who was elected to the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) in November 2018 and is the lone Republican on it, listed several more countywide and local accomplishments over the last three years, including: updating land use plans and planning revitalized downtowns, expanding affordable housing, protecting open spaces and helping approve a $100 million passive lands program.

Recently, Moore and the rest of the BCC unanimously approved a measure, requiring landlords to provide a 60-day written notice before levying a rent hike of more than 5 percent, reported the Orlando Sentinel. Orange County along with the rest of the country is facing an affordable housing crisis. However, Moore opposes putting a proposed rent-control measure on the Nov. 8 ballot. The board will likely decide that issue at its Aug. 9 meeting.

Until 2018, Moore served as an Orange County School Board member for a decade, including as vice-chair in 2013. She served as chairperson of the Value Adjustment Board and currently sits on the MetroPlan Orlando Board. She is a real estate agent and former professional musician.

In Orange County, nonpartisan races — county mayor, county commission, school board chair, school board members, and county and circuit judge candidates — are open to all registered voters of any party affiliation.
